What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing was a totally new concept to me a few years ago.

It’s what made me do more research and learn about #Beautycounter.

Greenwashing is the practice of making an unsubstantiated or misleading claim about the environmental or health benefits of a product using buzzwords like "green" or "natural." Those words are EVERYWHERE and are on EVERYTHING.

Due to major loopholes in federal law, cosmetics can be labeled “natural,” “organic,” “green,” “non-toxic,” and nearly any other word that comes to mind without containing ingredients that accurately meet those descriptions.

Those words have no true meaning when we talk about ingredients.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to sort through companies’ claims regarding the “greenness” of their products. "Organic" and "natural" don't necessarily mean safe (think poison ivy or lead) and chemical doesn’t necessarily mean harmful (water is a chemical, H20!). Beautycounter is committed to eliminating harmful chemicals and has proactively initiated the NEVER LIST of over 1,500 ingredients that you will NEVER find in their products.

It makes me feel safe and I value the transparency of companies that are open with what’s in their products and don’t have to use words that “sound good”. 🍃
