Ironman Journey - an early phase

One of the highlights of my week was talking to my friend Steph about her experience in triathlons! I met Steph through work at Lincoln College in Normal, IL and since I’ve moved away, she’s gotten really into tri’s!

It was fun to catch up with her on the phone and learn more about her triathlon story and tips!

Some top tips and things I learned from Steph and her story.

Steph started training for tri’s with a friend friend through Fleet Feet’s training program in Bloomington, Illinois. She’s now beginning her 3rd tri season!

Some other tips Steph had for us:

  • Buy a silicone swim cap, it’s easier on your hair

  • Get anti-fog googles

  • Xterra — go no sleeve (impacts your range of motion)

  • Mid June, start open water training once/week

  • Your legs feel wobbly after the swim so your swim to bike transition is the hard

  • Bike shoes can be $100+ and then you have to buy clips and pedals

  • Practice eating while you bike

  • Get padded bike shorts to train in and a 1 piece tri suit to race in

  • Do not skip breakfast on race day!!!

  • Laying out a mat for your transition area with your things arranged in a way that makes sense to you (using a yoga mat might work well)

Steph also added me to a wonderful Facebook community of Women who Tri and sent me follow up pictures of how she organizes her tri bag.

I have been really energized by the support of the triathlon community. I have a lot to learn, but I’m so excited and appreciative of the support of people like Steph!

If you’ve done triathlons before, I’d love to hear your tips below!
