1 week with Uncaged: What I Learned

For week 42 of #fitforsevens, I visited Uncaged Crossfit. Colin and I dropped in. It had been 6 months since I had stepped foot in a Crossfit gym (Colin is still going to a different gym in Fresno).

I was nervous, but I knew Katie and I knew I’d (probably) fall in love with the community that Uncaged appeared to have on Instagram.

Colin and I had a great workout and Katie and Melissa showed us around the gym. Not only did we feel welcomed, but we also felt like this could be a space we belonged to long term (me, especially).

I went home that night and started thinking about this Ironman that I really wanted to train for. Where would I find the time? Where would I train? All of these thoughts kept running through my head.

I reached out to Katie and Melissa and asked them what they thought about Uncaged sponsoring my year of Ironman training.

Not only were they on board, but Katie decided to go on this adventure with me: WHICH IS SO EXCITING BECAUSE MISERY LOVES COMPANY hahahahah

In all seriousness though, I could not be more grateful to be going on this Ironman journey with Katie, with the support of Colin and Melissa. I feel so excited about what’s to come on this adventure together. Crossfit is going to whip me back into shape in the meantime and if you ever want to come check out a class with me at Uncaged— I’d love that!!

One of my favorite things about Uncaged is that they also offer yoga as part of their programming on Thursdays and on Saturdays — come with me to a yoga class!!

My first week at Uncaged I was invited to Uncaged Fam Vegan Friendsgiving hosted at Kait’s house. It meant so much to be invited and when Colin and I showed up — it was a truly welcoming and safe experience. We had so much fun and felt so blessed to be a part of such a welcoming community after less than one week.

One HUGE takeaway that I have learned from #fitforsevens (my 2019 challenge to try a different kind of fitness each week of the year) was that community in fitness matters.

Find a community where you feel welcome, safe, and celebrated in and you will successful in that fitness experience.

I’m so excited for what this year with Uncaged has to bring.

Things I Learned During Week 1 With Uncaged

  • Community in fitness means everything. Being in a welcoming environment has a huge impact on your fitness experience.

  • Being away from Crossfit for 6 months means coming back is a humbling experience.

  • Vegan Thanksgiving is actually really tasty.

  • Co-owners Katie and Melissa are two of the nicest humans in the world.
