Acclimation Phase: Week 1

The purpose of the Acclimation Phase is to get your body starting to feel what training feels like. It’s definitely an adjustment, to go from just one workout a day to fitting in scheduling training for 3 different sports (biking, swimming and running).

I was also traveling for the entire duration of this week which was an added challenge for training.

Thankfully, in Arizona at the residence where my grandparents live, there is a really nice lap pool. It was a good way to get my feet wet (literally) in the water and practice lap swimming. I am pretty comfortable in the water, but not the best lap swimmer (yet!). The swim workouts this week made me realize how much work I have to do in this area.

The first 15 minute swim workout I did was hard. I couldn’t believe how winded I was after just one lap and how hard it was to keep moving for 15 minutes. Out of those 15 minutes, I was only moving for 8:04.

I know that the swim will be one of my greatest challenges and areas of opportunity during this training year.

The highlight of my week was getting to attend the 2019 Ironman Arizona in Tempe. Since I was already in Arizona visiting my grandparents, I got up early on Sunday morning and drove to Tempe to spectate at the 2019 Ironman that I’ll be racing next year. It was so much fun and I learned a lot. See the clips from my visit here.

One of my greatest takeaways from being a spectator at the 2019 Ironman was HOW HARD THE SWIMMING TRULY IS. After my first 15 minute swim in the pool I knew I had a lot of work to do. After witnessing those swimmers at the 2019 Ironman, I knew I had a LOT LOT LOT of work to do.

If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not being enough. I’m terrified.
